A museum is an important part of any state and country as it is a building that stores all documents and monuments of the heritage and history of a country. The museums of Uttar Pradesh are no different as a visit to these museums gives you an idea of the grandeur and spirituality of life in Uttar Pradesh over the years. Most of the museums of Uttar Pradesh are owned by the government; but there are also some privately run museums too.
The most famous museum is the ‘State Museum’ of Lucknow where you find different elements of the old society of Uttar Pradesh. You find different galleries for different eras and some of the best collections of bronzes and artifacts of past years. The Bharat Kala Bhawan in Varanasi is a famous museum housing artifacts, commodities and tools that belong to Indus valley civilization and other dynasties like Maurya, Gupta and Sunga.
The archeological museum of Sarnath is a famous museum of Uttar Pradesh which houses a good collection of artifacts like sculptures and bronzes belonging to Gautam Buddha era and other things connected to Buddhism. Mathura is where you find the Government Museum housing an excellent collection of sculptures belonging to ancient Mathura school of art; making it famous throughout India. This museum was founded by Sri F.S. Growse in the year 1874.
The Jhansi museum is found in Jhansi Fort and should not be missed when in UP. This is because you not only get an idea of the history and heritage of Jhansi, but you also learn more about the Bundelkhand region. On visiting Jhansi museum, you also get to learn more about Chandela dynasty as you find weapons, dresses, statues and photographs of the dynasty here.
The ancestral home of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and Indira Gandhi is Anand Bhavan which is found in Uttar Pradesh. It is now a beautiful museum that houses the memorabilia of the Nehru family and is historically important as many important decisions and events related to the freedom struggle took place here. It was in 1970 that Indira Gandhi donated this house to the Indian government and turned to a museum at her behest. It is now a place worth visiting in UP.
