Haridwar,the gateway to Gods, is the starting point of the journey to the sacred places of the rivers Ganges and the Yamuna.It is also called as Mayapuri,Gangadwar and Kapila.This is one of the four places where Kumbha Mela occurs.
Haridwar is one of the first places,where Ganga emerges from the mountains to touch the planes. So, the water is crystal clear and cool.
As per the legend, Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to get Moksha(salvage) to the souls of his ancestors who got perished due to sage Kapil's curse.
Lord Shiva was pleased and the river Ganges sprinkled from Lord Shiva's locks and its divine water revived the sons of King Sagar.The hindu devotees stand in the sacred waters here, praying for salvation of their ancestors.
Har ki Pauri - King Vikramaditya constructed this sacred ghat in memory of his brother Bhatrihari,who had come to Haridwar to meditate on the banks of the Ganga. This ghat is also
called Brahamakund.At twilight, golden hues of floral lamps reflected in the river Ganges creates the most enchanting sight.
The ghat is regarded as the most sacred and auspicious point to bathe in the Ganga during the Kumbh Mela held after 12 years and Ardh Kumbh after 6 years.
Sapt Rishi Ashram-As per the legend the Saptarishis (seven sages) were deep in meditation here. The river Ganga, not wanting to disturb them split herself into seven streams and started flowing around them.
Mansa Devi Temple - The temple of Goddess Mansa Devi is situated at the top of Bilwa Parvat.The conveyance here is the roperail which take the devotees to the old hilltop of Mansa Devi.
Chandi Devi Temple - The King of Kashmir-Suchat Singh constructed this temple,on the banks of the river Ganga,on the top of Neel Parvat in the year 1929 AD. A three kilometre trek from Chandighat,
The main statue was established,in 8th century A, by the Adi Shankaracharya,which is at a distance of six kilometres on Neel Parvat.
Maya Devi Temple - It is said that the heart and navel of Goddess Sati had fallen here.This is an ancient temple of Maya Devi the Adhisthatri deity of Haridwar, known as one of the Siddhapethas.
Daksha Mahadev Temple - This is the place where the King Daksh Prajapati, father of Sati (Lord Shiva's first wife) performed yagna.However,Sati burnt herself in the yagna kund,cause Shiva was not invited here.Angry Ganas,Shivas followers, killed King Daksha. Later, Lord Shiva excused him and brought him back to life.
Rajaji National Park - This is about 825 sq. km. in area,which attracts wildlife lovers with its natural beauty.There are various wild animals here.
