The rich and culturally varied north east state of India, Tripura is round the year occupied with the high spirits of various fairs. Most of the fairs are religious types but people form other religions take part in it with same feeling. Similar is the case with tribal festivals, where all the tribes come together and become one in Tripura.
Few of the major fairs for which people await with much enthusiasm are:
Poush Sankrati Fair (Makar Sakranti fair) : Held regularly in Amarpur subdivision at Trithamukh, the fair attract huge crowds from all over the state. The fair takes place at the origin of river Gomati, also known as Tirthamukh. On the last day of the month Pousa (mid-January), devotees take a sacred bath in the river.
Ashokastami Fair : This fair is held every year in the time period of March-April in Kailashahar subdivision at Unakotitirtha. People gather in masses to offer their prayers to numerous deities carved on the Unkoti hill walls.
Besides these, the other famous fairs are :
Rathajatra mela, Sri Panchami mela, Shivaratri mela, Janmastami mela, Charak mela, Baruni sran (Baruani mela), Sita Ram Kunda mela, Shiva Chaturdashi mela, Mela (year ending), Kanchanmala mela (held on the event of Poush Sankranti), Narayan Khamar mela (held on the function of Shripanchami) and the list of Tripura fairs goes on.
