Waterfalls are always pleasant to visit for both adventure and fun. One such waterfall located amidst the coffee plantations, falling from a height of 70 feet on a huge boulder is the Abbey Falls (also called Jesse falls (by the British)) situated approximately 10 kms from Madikeri. It is really a treat to watch the roaring water torrent plunging down the mountain slope at enormous speed in the monsoon season from July to October. One can walk up the falls through a flight of steps.
During Monsoon the waterfalls looks its best but the trek might get slippery due to incessant rains and the path will be infested with leeches. The best time to visit is from September to February. During summer the waterfalls is dry with just a small streak of white line.
The cascading water descends to join the river Cauvery. A narrow road winding through the green and dense foliage of surrounding coffee plantations leads to Abbey Falls. Situated on private property, a narrow pathway leads you downward to where the waterfall can be seen.
Standing on the hanging bridge close to the falls and getting the sprinkles of water as it gushes down gives you an ever-lasting memory of your visit.
