The cultural diversity of Tamil Nadu is manifested by its plethora of intellectually enriching Iyal (Literature), Isai (Music) and Nadagam (Drama) whose origins can be traced back to the longstanding folklore Therukoothu. The variegated folk dances of Tamil Nadu is also extremely popular and attracts masses of admiring crowds.
One of Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated dance forms is the Kali Attam, a highly energetic and vivacious dance form that is appreciated by the young and old alike. The nomenclature of Kali Attam signifies fun, frolic and games. This dance form, a rage among the locals is also known by the nom de plumes Koladi, Kolkali, Kambadi Kali and Kolaattam .
Men, women and children gaily indulge in Kali Attam and dance with alacrity, enthusiasm and alert quick movements ensuring that they do not injure their partners. The dance requires the performers to clasp one foot long sticks in each hand which when beating resonate hoarsely. The dancers move graciously with swift athletic steps, twists and complex turns.
The ‘kol’ or sticks that are an integral part of this dance are beautifully painted in vivid colors and exquisitely embellished with pretty brass rings and quaint bells. This dance is mainly performed during festivals, weddings or other joyous occasions when the heavily bejeweled performers are adorned in anklets that tinkle melodiously as the dancers sway to and fro. The dancers however do not garb themselves in any special attire or make up.
