Meghalaya is a very small state in north eastern part of the Indian Territory. Meghalaya temples slowly got popularity and today it is also one of the centers for major pilgrimages held annually. There are 2 National parks and around 3 Wild Life Sanctuaries in Meghalaya.
Often referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East’, the state’s capital Shillong is breathtaking and has a striking similarity to the beautiful country of Scotland. Most of the Meghalaya temples are scattered across this city
All tourists visiting the state in fact are reminded to carry an umbrella compulsorily. October through November and March through April are the most recommended months to visit Meghalaya.
Most important tourist destinations in Meghalaya include: Cherrapunjee and its spectacular 50 kilometer stretch of long road that connects with Shillong, the sizzling hot springs at Jakrem near Mawsynram which are said to have curative powers, for medicinal curative, the Umiam Lake. Also not to forget are the water falls like the Elephant Falls, Shadthum Falls, Weinia Falls, Bishop Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Langshiang falls and Sweet Falls, besides many trekking, water skiing and adventurous sports.
The most important of fairs and festivals in Meghalaya, are the Khasi festival, Shad Suk Mynsiem and thet Ka Pomblang Nongkrem, that embodifies virgin dances, goat sacrifices among others.
