Museums in Manipur have a rich collection of artifacts, which bear testimony to the grand history of the nation in general and the North East in particular. There are several museums in Manipur. Among them, the most famous and the most frequented ones are the Manipur State Museum and the Sekta Archaeological Living museum.
The Manipur State Museum is located in the proximity of the Imphal Polo ground, which was an important social as well as political hotbed in the British era. It has got a plethora of historical artifacts on display. The heritage of the state is also avidly reflected in these artifacts. There are also majestic portraits of the state's former rulers, since the late eighteenth century. There are several items that evoke special interest. Among them are indigenous weapons (both melee and ranged), armor and robes of the bygone eras. The museum remains open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
There is a mound not unlike Mohenjo Daro, called the Sekta mound (locally called the 'Sekta Kei'). It is located approximately 16 kilometers from the state capital of Imphal. It is easily accessible as it is located on the Imphal Ukhrul road. This place is famous for the evidence of secondary burial found here. It is an important excavation site and is being excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
