Prince of Wales Museum

The Prince of Wales Museum, came into existence to pay tribute to the glorioius visit of the Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, and future monarch, King Edward VII of the United Kingdom . This museum of lingering memory, is situated on the the South of Mumbai, and is adjacent to the Gateway of India.

This museum established in early twentieth century, by some emimnent denizens of Mumbai (previously Bombay) has assumed a new name, called, Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya .

History recounts, that on June 22, 1904, the Museum- plannimng committee, interested , embarked on the decision of constructing a manificent and attractive building at the chosen site for the museum. The then government delivered to the Museum-committee, a piece of land called the "Crescent Site", on March 1, 1907. Post a declared contest for proving talent and task-handling, George Wittet was furnished with the opportunity to contrive the framework of the building in 1909 . Wittet was assisted by another famous architect, known as John Begg, in the making of the General Post Office building. The towering achievementds of this accomplished architect include, the Court of Small Causes and the awesome Gateway of India .

The museum accomodates not only attractive Indian articles, but also oreigmn produts of immense worth . Certainly, articles belonging to the 2000 BC`s ages-old Indus Valley Civilization , display relics and souveneirs hailing from the Guptas and the Mauryan art . Indeed, Art, Archaeology and Natural History are the major segments of the Prince of Wales, Museum, Mumbai .

Even invaluable Tibetan and Nepali Art is a delight for the visitors, looking for colorful variety in the Prince Wales Museum, Mumbai. The visitors, engrossed in the sublime essence of Buddhism, will be filled up with brewing enthusiasm, at the sight of a whole gallery, preserving Buddhist tankha scrolls. The other source of enigma is the gallery crowded with Tibetan bronzes.

Mind-blowing is the repository of above 2000 miniature paintings, created by the several art schools of India. The Museum remains open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday . The visiting hours start from 10.30 am and continues till 6 pm.
