A chain of emeralds created by volcanic eruptions in the Arabian Sea now rests off the Kerala shore. Glass bottomed boats in the lagoons and the well-stocked aquatic museum provide insight into the diverse sea life of the union territory of Lakshadweep.

Kalpeni Island - Kalpeni forms an atoll with Cherriyam (uninhabited), Tilakkam and Pitti (small islets). The enormous storm banks of coral debris distinguish it from the other islands. Its unique relief feature, believed to be a result of a violent storm in 1847, provides for past times such as reef walking. It is a progressive island where girls first enrolled into schools.

Kadamat Island - The variety of fishes available and a visibility of 20-50 meters under water makes this Lakshadweep Island an unparalleled diving destination for scuba divers. Coral beaches and fresh water lagoons are ideal for water sports of all intensity.

Minicoy Island - An elongated island isolated from other clusters, to the north of the Lakshadweep chain, Minicoy has a distinct culture of its own. A cluster of 11 villages, with elected elders and decorated village houses, lead a democratic way of life. Built by British in 1885, a 300-foot tall lighthouse stands guard over this Lakshadweep Island. You can feast your eyes on the colorful race boats called 'Jahadhoni' and the traditional dance form 'Lava' performed during festivals. Shipping industry and tuna canning factories are a major source of livelihood.

Agatti Island - The airport, with regular Air India flights, makes Agatti Island the gateway to the other Lakshadweep Islands. It is home to some of the best lagoons the world has ever seen. How to Reach Lakshadweep

The Lakshadweep islands are 400 kms west of the coast of Kerala. From the Indian Mainland you may either board the regular flights or the vessels that ply between Cochin and Agatti. The Indian Airlines flight caters to the air transportation and the ships sails to the major islands of Lakshadweep in a sequence. For inter island travel you may need to use the boat or the helicopter services since they are usually miles apart and could take anything between three to twenty hours.

Important Travel Information

You will need to obtain an entry permit from Cochin or Delhi to get in many of the Lakshadweep islands. In order to obtain the permit one has to furnish several particulars like the passport details, the proof of nationality et al. Only Indian Nationals are allowed entry to many of the islands in Lakshadweep.

Most of the equipments required for the water sports are available at the various islands of Lakshadweep themselves.

Tourists are prohibited from carrying alcoholic beverages into the islands of Lakshadweep.

It is illegal to pick up corals from any of the Lakshadweep islands. So in case you wish to collect any coral for souvenir then get ready for the heavy fines that you will need to pay as punishment for the act.

Similarly the tourists are not supposed to litter around and spoil the beautiful waters.

The tourists are expected to help the local administration and the inhabitants of the various islands of Lakshadweep in preservation of the fragile ecology of the coral islands.
