Dudhsagar Falls (literally meaning The Sea of Milk) is a tiered waterfall located high up on the Mandovi River, on the border of Goa and Karnataka.
Located at the Sanguem Taluka on the Goa-Karnataka border, the impressive Dudhsagar Waterfall is a renowned tourist attraction. Dudhsagar Waterfall, which is situated in the high peaks of the Western Ghats, is a mesmerising sight to behold especially during monsoon, when it is in its element.
The magnificent 600 metres waterfall that appears like streams of milk rushing down from the mountainside from a distance, Dudhsagar in the local language means sea of milk and is called so because of the clouds of milky foam that rises up at the bottom of the falls.
Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's 5th tallest waterfall,and is 227th in the world at 310 m.
The magnificent falls are located in an idyllic tropical forest with intersecting streams all along, thus, rendering an awesome look when viewed from the top. The falls looks even better at the mysterious radiance of the first morning sun. The falls lie high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are not particularly spectacular during the dry season. During the monsoon season however, the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India.
Many tourists who visit Dudh Sagar prefer swimming in the calm waters. It is quite safe to swim there provided one is careful enough. The Dudhsagar waterfalls provide a breathtaking view from the top and they look scintillating during the crack of dawn. Those who love adventure and thrill can always try to climb to the head of the waterfalls though the rough path full of rocks, vegetation and water. It may take a couple of hours but it will definitely be worth it! The fall's surrounding area form a good picnic spot. While visiting Dudhsagar falls, one should ensure that at least entire day is spent near the falls.
How to Reach
The waterfall is accessible by train and rough road. It is 10 kilometers from Kulem Railway Station. The train takes around 2 hours from Margao. Alternatively, taxis and buses can be hired.
