Mysore

Mysore, the second largest city in Karnataka is located in the Mysore division and is easily reachable from Bangalore. Located 146 km away, it lies to the southwest of the capital city.

The word Mysore is derived from “Mahishuru” which literally means the abode of Mahisha, as per tales of the demon Mahishasura (Mahisha means buffalo and Asura, the demon) who was slayed by Goddess Chamundeshwari. The Mysore city spans an area of 128.42 sq km and is located at the base of the Chamundi Hills.

Mysore apart from the world famous Mysore Palace, is known for the festivities that occur during the Dussera Festival. This is the time when the city sees the maximum number of visitors. Mysore is known for its distinct culture in not just India, but abroad as well.

Mysore Palace with its intricate architecture and splendid carvings has the work of true craftsmanship. This is easily visible in the ceilings, rosewood doors, paintings and more that portrays the glimpse of the glorious yester years. Brindavan Gardens and the fountains that give a musical melody at Krishna Raj Sagar dam are some other attractions that have contributed to the popularity of Mysore.

Tipu Sultan’s Palace is yet another attraction. Also, the city offers attractions for art lovers in the form of Jaganmohan Palace and Art Gallery, St. Philomena's Church, Lalit Mahal Palace, Datta Peetham, Karanji Kere, Jayalakshmivilas Mansion, Happy Man Park, museums, Mysore Zoo and more.

The various items, exclusive to the place which get their name from the city include Mysore paintings, Mysore Malliage, the sweet delicacy Mysore Pak and the traditional turban made from silk, Mysore Peta. Mysore silk saris are another popular commodity. Mysore touts to be the second cleanest city in the country as per the 2010 census and is also the cleanest one in Karnataka.

The Mysore Palace is an architectural beauty that has lived through time. Chamundi Hills is a popular religious centre that lies close to Mysore. Known for the faith Hindus have in the Goddess Chamundeshwari, this is also popular among adventure lovers offering an excellent trekking route.
