Mayem Lake is an artificial lake located at a distance of 35 kilometers from Panaji. This eco-resort is perfect for a short holiday amidst nature. The serene lake is surrounded by hills with thick forest cover. The amazingly quiet and peaceful atmosphere is accentuated by the chirping of birds, of which many kinds can be spotted during a boat ride. The boat rides are the chief recreation here, apart from enjoying the calmness. Nothing rejuvenates the tired city mind than a leisurely boat ride on Mayem Lake. For accommodation, there are some excellent cottages located at the slopes of the hills. The medieval Corjuem Fort and the Saptakoteshwar temple at Narve are the chief tourist attractions around the lake.
This lake is noted as one of the popular tourist spots in Goa. It is situated in the Carambolim village, about 12 kilometers from Panaji. This lake was built for irrigational purposes. The local village is served by this lake.
The lake is fed by rainwater, and during monsoons and winter, numerous species of birds nest here. The whole area swarms with birds and their flurry of activities all day long during this nesting season. The number of birds is said to reach around 10,000 by February each year. Pintail Ducks, Lesser Whistling Teal, Coots, Cattle Egret, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Pond Heron, Little Egret, Swallow, and Marsh Harriers are the chief species of birds that are spotted around the lake. Many of these are migratory species, spotted in large swarms during winter.
This lake is fast becoming a popular destination for tourists and bird watchers. It is located in south Goa and has been well maintained by the authorities so far. The lake offers boating facilities.
