National Archives Museum

The National Archives of India is ultimate and the final source for the documents related to the Government of India. It has the collection of the non-current records of the Government of India. This institute was conceived keeping in mind the need to access non-current documents in case of research. So if you have come to India for research purpose or otherwise, this place is a must visit. This place is run and maintained by the department of Culture, Government. The National Archives of India comes under the purview of Ministry of culture affairs. The gallery cum museum was set up in March 1891 in Kolkata as the Imperial Record Department. This was later transferred to New Delhi when Delhi was chosen for the seat of power in 1911. It was shifted to its present building in 1926.

The National Archives of India is headed by the Director General of Archives who is assisted by Deputy Directors of Archives looking after various Divisions like Record Management, Administration, Training, Publication, Records, and Library etc. The Department has a Regional Office at Bhopal and record Centers at Bhubaneswar, Jaipur and Pondicherry.

The major work of the National Archives of India is to preserve the records of the Govt. of India in its custody, preparing Inventories, Indices, Catalogues and other Reference Media of the public records. Besides, it also accepts records from any private source for safe custody.
