Developed by Delhi Development Authority in 1970, Sanjay Lake is an artificial lake located at Mayur Vihar in Delhi. The main water source is the sewer and rainwater from the adjoining areas. This lake offers excellent boating facilities to the visitors. Green lawns and gardens have been developed around the park. This complex is also famous for a variety of indigenous trees and plants. Inside the park there is a well-laid fitness track for joggers. The lake and the garden spread over an area of about 38 acres. One of the few natural retreats in the city, Sanjay Lake in East Delhi, is slowly losing its charm. While the lake attracts a number of migratory birds every winter, pollution might hamper the trend, warn environmentalists. And with the Delhi Government not responding to warnings, local residents have decided to take matters into their own hands.
While part of the lake has been developed by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation as a tourist spot, another section is dumped with untreated sewage water from the surrounding residential areas. That is not all. Highlighting the problems of the area, the study also notes that residents from the surrounding slum area use the lake for bathing their buffaloes, open defecation and washing and bleaching activities.
