There are not many lakes in Chandigarh but if you ask a local person about it, what he or she will do is utter the name of the Sukhna Lake. Sukhna Lake is the only noteworthy lake of Chandigarh and has earned the status of the well-maintained lakes of India. The Sukhna Lake serves Chandigarh like heart serves to the body. The Chandigarh Lake is well-fed by seasonal downpour. In 1958, the lake was created blocking the Sukhna Choe, a stream flowing down from the Shibalik hills. The lake was created according to the master plan made by Le Corbusier, the chief architect of the city of Chandigarh.

The Sukhna Lake is edged by a golf course on its southern side and the famous Rock garden, another place of interest in Chandigarh, on its west bank. The top of the dam that supplies water to Sukhna Lake is a favorite walkway for many. The local folks go there for doing exercise, lovers whisper the deepest say from their heart, and children have unrestricted fun. The place is also visited by photo-hunters and artists. The fishermen also come here for their regular hunting. There is a lake Club as well within the vicinity of Sukhna Lake which is only open to members. They facilitate the members with myriad opportunities like swimming, sculling, boating, kayaking and rowing. Asian Rowing Championships are held here after regular intervals. In point of fact, the watercourse is the longest rowing and yachting venue in Asia.

Sukhna Lake
On the south eastern boundary of the city is the seasonal rivulet Sukhana choe. Water through it used to flow away in the rainy season. The planner of the city through their imagination, created a lake by obstructing the flow of rain water through the Sukhana Choe. A three and half km long dam was built to create a reservoir of water. Now known as Sukhna Lake. People generally come here for a morning or evening walk. It consists of an eating place, children’s park. It also has facility for boating and rafting for the adventure seekers. A major hit with children and grown-ups alike. At one end of the Lake are the premises of Lake Club. The club management takes care to provide facilities for water sports and recreational activities. Water sports become annual feature.
