Assam is situated between 90-96 degree East Longitude and 24-28 degree North Latitude, It is the gateway to the north eastern part of India. The mighty Brahmaputra river that has its origins in Tibet charts its majestic course through this state. It is also famous for one horned rhino as well as gibbons in its wildlife parks, below is the list of some important national parks in Assam
Magnificent World of Wilderness
Assam with its huge forest cover, vast open lands and incredible climate is an excellent place for wildlife to flourish. Assam is most famous for two things, one is its tea and the other its pristine wildlife parks. Most Famous without a doubt is the Kaziranga National Park that is home to most number of one horned rhino in the world. According to recent study, the population of one horned rhino in Kaziranga accounts to two third of their total world population. What many don't know is that it also has the highest density of tigers in the world. The varying climate and landscape also proves to be of lot of help in preserving different species of animals. And climate is the main reason in attracting numerous migratory birds into the state. Many tourist visit Assam just to take a trip to the many wildlife sanctuaries in the state.
Kaziranga National Park
Spread over an area of 430 sq Km, Kaziranga National Park is one of the most important wildife parks in entire India. It is most famous for the number of one horned rhino that are found here. It is the highest anywhere in the world and is two third of the total world population. A major potion of the park is covered with elephant grass which are quite tall. They prove to be an ideal grazing ground for the rhino. Kaziranga park also has the highest density of tigers in the world. If you spend a little time in Kaziranga, sighting both of them is almost sure. You will also see large herds of elephants roaming inside the park. Other animals that are found in the park are Indian bison, swamp deer, Sambar, Hog deer, sloth bear, Hoolock gibbon and many more. Kaziranga National Park is also a great nesting place for local and migratory birds like Hornbill, egret, heron, adjutant stork and fishing eagle. The park is situated around 237 Km from Guwahati and the best time to visit the park is during November to March. The park is closed from April to mid October.
Manas National Park
Manas National Park is located on the foothill of Himalayas with some part of the part extending into the territory of Bhutan. Manas national Park started with a an area of around 360 sq km was declared a national park in the year 1928. Its area was further increased to 391 sq km in 1955. It was recognized as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1985. Today the park covers a total area of 520 sq km, has a core area of 360 sq km and is most famous for its tiger population. It is the only wildlife park in Assam that is comes under Project Tiger. Apart from tigers, one horned rhino, Wild boar, Sambar, Hog Deer are found here. Pigmy Hog, Assam Roofed turtle, Hispid Hare are few animals that are found only in Manas National Park. The park is around 176 km from Guwahati and there are regular bus service between the two destinations.
