The Brahmaputra beach festival is held on the ravine beaches of the River Brahmaputra in the state of Assam. The festival coincides with the festival of harvest known as the Magh Bihu in Assam. Inspired from the various festivals held in the southern states of India, this festival represents the culture and tradition of the state of Assam.
The Brahmaputra beach festival is organized by the Assam Boat Racing and Rowing Association in Guwahati in collaboration with the Department of Tourism of the government of Assam. The beaches of the River Brahmaputra are occupied to set up the fairs, which are visited by the tourists from different states and mostly by the inhabitants of the state of Assam. The beach festival includes several events in which the tourists may participate and reveal their skill. Various water sports are organized on the river itself. These include water rafting, canoeing, and wind surfing and ice-skating. Aero sports are also displayed during the festival. These modern and technically advanced games are coupled with the traditional games of egg breaking and cock fighting. Sit and draw and kite flying competitions are held on the beach in which the children can participate. Exhibitions displaying the traditional craft of the state are also a part of the festival. The tourists may return with souvenirs that are characteristics of the state from this festival.
The Brahmaputra beach festival is held in the winter month of January. The festival is a confluence of the conventional with the modern and is filled with a joyous spirit that is luring for all.
