The Gunupudi Someswara Temple – Godawari in Andhra Pradesh is one of the most important of the holy Pancharams. The Gunupudi Someswara Temple is situated in Bhivavaram in the West Godavari district. The third century built masterpiece has a unique feature, which perhaps no other temple can boast of. The Shivalinga of the temple is said to assume a blackish brown color on a no moon night while it turns whitish on the full moon night.
The above mentioned characteristic is not the only surprising feature of the wonderful ancient temple. The Gunupudi Someswara Temple has a remarkable temple of Goddess Annapurna built atop the Lord Shiva temple. This is indeed an unique feature, not seen elsewhere in the country. A sacred thread is worn by the goddess around her neck. Th main temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is another temple, which has the Shayambhu Shivlinga. The five feet high Shivlinga attracts thousand of worshipers and devotees. The temple is an excellent example of south Indian temple architecture with a pyramid like shape. The pillars of the temple has letters written in Pali language inscribed in it. The Gunupudi Someswara Temple is also not very far from Vijayawada with a distance of hundred and seven Kilometers. The one of the favorite among the Andhra Pradesh tourist destinations is well connected by two nearby railway stations. They are Bhivavaram Junction Railway Station and Bhivavaram Town Railway Station.
